Id Software has begun taking applications for its Quake Live Beta Program.
Just shuffle over to the website and pop your email address in. Then, if you're successful, you will not only have a say in how the final game turns out, but also be given early access to it.
Quake Live is a browser-based version of Quake 3 Arena, which we liked very much thank you for asking. It has been trimmed and tweaked to run convincingly on almost any machine, and will be funded by ads, sponsorship and creative branding rather than by your money.
Despite being browser-based, Quake Live will actually be installed to your machine and not run in a web-page. But with a fast front-end and some shifted file structures it should all be very nippy, apparently.
Pop over to our Quake Live gallery for the first two shots.

Ja, det ser det ud til.
Kan du linke mig det til det Microsoft har at sige om sagen?
Lidt info fra forskellige kilder:
Microsoft plans to "democratise" game development and distribution by allowing amateur game developers to `release` XNA games on Xbox Live Marketplace following peer-review.
Speaking at GDC, chief XNA architect Chris Satchell also revealed that trial versions of several community-made games are now available to download on Xbox Live Marketplace.
He didn't stop at that, either. XNA games will now also work on Zune MP3 players (does anyone actually own one?) with wireless multiplayer support. Microsoft in handheld gaming! Sort of.
"For the first time ever this year you'll be able to have community games distributed via Xbox Live," Satchell told an excitable audience in the Moscone Center Esplanade Ballroom as part of Microsoft's GDC keynote speech.
The community will be able to create, submit, review and play the games. "I'm not going to be the arbiter of what the community does," said Satchell. Instead people will be able to specify what's in their game, then let other creators check it for prohibited content (e.g. copyright infringement) before accepting it.
Some of the first XNA games to appear will be Jellycar, Dishwasher, ProximityHD, Culture, Rocketball and Trilinea. Jellycar and Dishwasher were both shown - the latter is a 2D hackandslash featuring cyborgs, while Jellycar is a smashing little side-scrolling physics racer.
Thanks to this initiative, Microsoft hopes to give us all truckloads more content to download from Xbox Live this year, in addition to the 1000+ Xbox 360 games that will be available in total by the end of the year.

Community Games coming to Xbox LIVE
It was just announced at GDC that we are introducing a new, open distribution service for games created by the community. Games created with the XNA Game Studio will be available over Xbox LIVE. Later today, seven games created by the community will be available for download (for free) over Xbox LIVE. I will have a video up on Inside Xbox as well that shows you how to download the games.
http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/02/20/community-games-coming-to-xbox-live.aspx
Major Nelson henviser til denne faq:
Starting with the beta launch of the Xbox LIVE Community Games service later this spring, subscribers of the XNA Creators Club will be able to submit their own game creations for self-distribution through to Xbox LIVE Marketplace via the http://creators.xna.com website. A community of their subscriber peers will be given a chance to download, play and review the game and its content for appropriateness and conformance to the service’s TOS. Should it pass, the game will then be added to the global games catalog on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and available to gamers worldwide connected to Xbox LIVE.
A special preview of a subset of Xbox LIVE Community Games will be made available on February 20th, 2008 after the GDC keynote announcements. These community games will be available for download from 11am PST on Feb 20th, and will be playable for a very limited time. The initial seven preview games are The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, JellyCar, Little Gamers, Proximity HD, Rocketball, TriLinea, and Culture.
Q: Do I need an XNA Creators Club subscription to play the Xbox LIVE Community Games?
A: Not at all! It's free to Xbox LIVE members. Here's how you do it (thanks to John Sedlak for writing this).
1) Go to the marketplace tab on your Xbox 360 and view "Game Store" then "All Games".
2) Near the bottom will be a game called "XNA Creators Club", select this.
3) Select and download "XNA Creators Club Game Launcher" (not "XNA Game Launcher")
4) Go back to the Games tab (green) and select "Games Library" and then "My Games." Finally, scroll to the right to the "XNA Creators Club" tab as usual.
5) Press Y to download XNA games!
Here's an interview Major Nelson did with Michael Klucher where he describes the steps above: http://www.xbox.com/NR/rdonlyres/29B2AC5C-DB2C-4A6E-81B8-2AB3C59E509F/0/vidgdcxna001lo.asx
Q: Do I need an XNA Creators Club subscription to make games now?
A: No, but if you want to make the game available on the Xbox LIVE Community Games area, or peer review submitted games, you must be a subscriber.
Q: I don’t see the XNA Creators Club subscription service offered on Xbox Marketplace, why?
A: If you don’t see the XNA Creators Club subscription service, it’s probably because you live in a country that doesn’t currently offer that service, even if you have access to Xbox LIVE. The XNA Creators Club subscription service is being rolled out to various countries on different timetables.
Q: I don’t own an Xbox, or live in a country that doesn’t have Xbox LIVE, how can I get an XNA Creators Club subscription?
A: At this time, it is not possible to get an XNA Creators Club subscription without access to an Xbox connected to Xbox LIVE. We understand this is an inconvenience for some of you, and are working to resolve the issue. Please monitor http://creators.xna.com announcements for more details when we post them.
Q: Why does my game have to be peer-reviewed? Why can’t I just post it?
A: Peer reviewers are there to help creators write better games, and also to protect game players from experiencing highly offensive or malfunctioning games. Peer reviewers will reject your game if:
- You have prohibited content in the game, not allowed on Xbox Live services
- You misrepresent what’s in the game play or in the promotional materials for the game
- The promotional content for your game ( banner, title) is not appropriate for all ages on Xbox Live marketplace
- The game crashes, has too many bugs or is otherwise technically defective
Q: What happens if somebody sneaks something through in a game?
A: Microsoft reserves the right to reactively take down a game without prior notification, and enables anybody to report objectionable content in a game. In addition, creators that willfully submit games with misleading content indicators can have a series of punitive actions taken, including loss of subscriptions and removal from the site. Microsoft will also comply with all legal requests where required by law.
Q: How complex does the game have to be?
A: There are no complexity requirements before the game is submitted, but games can be rated by the community for playability, “fun factor”, etc.
Q: So I can make clones of games already on Xbox LIVE Arcade or somewhere else?
A: Not any more than you can make copies of Halo 3. When you submit a game you agree that you own all the rights to the materials in your game. If you don’t, then don’t submit the game.
Q: Does this mean Xbox LIVE Arcade is going away?
A: No. The design and goal for the Xbox LIVE Community Games is to provide a distribution channel for enthusiasts to share homebrew creations freely with their peers and friends. Some games may “graduate” to a full Arcade contract as the Dream Build Play game winners have done, but the idea is to offer a different venue for game creativity.
Q: Can I sell my game on Xbox LIVE Community Games? What is the revenue split?
A: We are still finalizing the business models and revenue sharing details of Xbox LIVE Community Games at this time. More information will be available closer to the retail consumer launch this holiday.
Q: Who owns the IP rights to the game I create? Can I distribute my game on non-Microsoft services?
A: You own the IP rights to your game. However, we may provide incentives for exclusive distribution on Microsoft services.
Q: How do I set the ESRB rating for my community game?
A: A: Xbox LIVE Community Games are not rated by the ESRB; however, they are reviewed by XNA Creators Club members and will have a game classification before appearing on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
Q: Will parental controls affect access to my community game?
A: Yes. All community games are considered unrated which is the highest level of restriction on the Xbox 360 console. For consoles with parental controls activated, community games will be inaccessible.

Bede-x | Skrevet 21/02-08 12:15 | De syv første XNA spil er som følger:
· “JellyCar.” Created by Walaber from the United States, this game is about driving a squishy car through squishy worlds, trying to reach the exit.
· “Little Gamers.” This is a 2-D high definition action side-scroller based on the famous Web comic “Little Gamers” created by Loïc Dansart, a 24-year-old software developer from Belgium.
· “Dishwasher.” An intense 2-D action platform game created by James Silva from the United States, “Dishwasher” has a unique, highly stylized look and fast and fluid action.
· “TriLinea.” This puzzle game created by Edison S. Prata Jr., Renato Pelizzari da Silva and Davi da Silva Prata from Brazil mixes fast-paced action with strategy.
· “RocketBall.” Created by Tyler Wanlass, Patrick Murty and Todd Barrons of the United States, this neighborhood game of dodgeball explodes onto the street with fast-paced multiplayer action.
· “ProximityHD.” This game, created by Brian Cable from the United States, takes the essence of strategy games — battles for control of territory and armies — and distills it down to a simple, easy-to-understand set of rules for casual players.
· “Culture.” Created by independent game development company Hidden Path Entertainment from the United States, “Culture” contains challenging games and puzzles based on beautiful flowers.
