Amiga
The Amiga was, when it initially launched, a revolutionising platform, well ahead of its time. The platform was developed by an independent group, supported by Atari - who ended up developing its own 16 bit computer. In stead, Amiga was bought by Commodore, who relatively easily outperformed the Atari ST and gained the perfect replacement for the Commodore 64.
Amiga 1000 was initially envisioned as a serious work station, and with its advanced audiovisuals capabilities and true multi tasking, complete with GUI, it was also used as such. But with the sleeker and cheaper Amiga 500, the platform was being transformed into a games computer. Most of the Western developers of today, started on the Amiga, where many started their career in the so called 'demo scene'. Commodore continued the development of Amiga computers, but several flops in a row, like the Amiga 600 and the CDTV, proved to be too hard of a financial hit, and eventually drove the company bankrupt in the middle of the 90s. Since then, the right to the Amiga brand has been bought and sold several times, in an effort to continue the development of the platform, as Amiga - even to this day - has a very dedicated user group. Amiga machines have always been based on Motorola processors from 68000 to the PowerPC. Apart from this, the rest of the interior is mostly specialized Commodore chips. There is an almost endless row of games for the Amiga platform, and among these a very fair number of classics - a lot of them multi platform games. Among the most interesting Amiga-oriented games, the following should be mentioned: Lemmings, Defender Of The Crown, Populous, Speed Ball, Sensible Soccer, Turrican and Wings.
